This article pertains to all SnowStorm Snow Plow Systems that were manufactured prior to 2017

Today, were going to do a tutorial on adjusting your Snowstorm snow plow trip edge spring tension. So, for those of you that own KAGE® SnowStorm 12- to 14-foot snow plows, this blog and video are for you. We designed this snow plow for Wheel Loaders, Tractors and other large commercial equipment applications.

We’re going to walk you through the process of adjusting the spring tension because you want to get the trip edge dialed in so that your plow will carry snow, but it won’t be too stiff that it damages property like manhole covers, parking blocks or curbs. And if the tension is too loose your going to just continually leave snow behind as your plowing.Snow Plow Trip Edge Spring Tension Adjustment

As you look at the top of the springs you’ll see the top of the main bolts and a jam nut – this is your adjustment on the spring’s down pressure. When adjusting these bolts, they might be seized if your plowed has had a lot of use.

We’ll list the replacement part numbers below if you need to reorder them. The tools you’ll need are:

  1. ¾” Impact Drill with ½” socket
  2. 1 ½” wrench
  3. WD-40 Lubricant or PB Blaster for really seized bolts
  4. All-purpose Grease

Before you begin loosening all the bolts, use the WD-40 on the threads. Another option is using PB Blaster for helping to free up really seized bolts. Give it a little time to soak in. Keep in mind, if your snow plow is elevated, take out one spring at a time. If you take out all the springs, the cutting edge will drop down and away making it difficult for installing the springs later.

When the spring is removed, grease both the female and male tubes to prevent future seizing. Again, work with one spring at a time. Prior to tightening down the bolts, give them another shot of WD-40.

WARNING: When tightening the bolts back down after the spring is installed, don’t attempt to over-compress the springs to gain more tension. Doing this will reduce the amount travel for the trip edge which could result in damage to your snow plow.

For 2017 or newer Snowstorm models, we’ve eliminated the jam nut and designed the bolt to tighten down at the optimal tension level.
